Emergency grants available to residents across the Gold Coast local …

As the Gold Coast community continues to recover from the devastating storms and flooding that swept through the region over the Christmas and New Year period, the Queensland Government has stepped up to provide critical financial assistance to those impacted. Through the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), a range of emergency grants and support measures are now accessible to eligible residents across the entire Gold Coast local government area (LGA).

Expanding Disaster Assistance Across the Gold Coast

In the immediate aftermath of the severe weather that struck on Christmas night, the Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme was initially activated for targeted localities within the Gold Coast, Logan, and Scenic Rim regions. However, as the full extent of the damage became apparent, the Queensland Government has now extended these vital support measures to cover the entire City of Gold Coast.

As noted by Minister for Fire and Disaster Recovery Nikki Boyd, “Rarely, if ever, have storms on the Gold Coast had such widespread impacts. This Personal Hardship Assistance provides direct financial aid to impacted residents, and our emergency crews continue to work around the clock to clear debris and restore connections.”

Accessing Emergency Grants and Assistance

Eligible disaster-affected residents across the Gold Coast LGA can now apply for a range of support, including:

Individual Grants:
– $180 for individuals
– Up to $900 for families of five or more

These grants are designed to cover the costs of essential items like food, clothing, and medicine in the wake of the storms.

Home and Property Assistance:
– Grants to help repair damaged homes
– Funding to replace lost or damaged household contents
– Support to reconnect essential services like electricity, water, and sewerage

The Essential Services Safety and Reconnection Scheme is also available to provide uninsured, low-income residents with grants to help restore critical utilities.

To check your eligibility and learn more about how to apply for these disaster assistance measures, you can visit www.qld.gov.au/disasterhelp or call the Queensland Community Recovery Hotline at 1800 173 349. Residents can also visit one of the Community Recovery Hubs operating across the Gold Coast LGA for in-person support.

The Ongoing Recovery Effort

As the Queensland Government works to activate and distribute these emergency grants, the recovery effort on the ground continues with a sense of urgency. Federal Minister for Emergency Management Murray Watt acknowledged the widespread impacts, stating, “The extent of the damage from wild storms that tore through the Gold Coast has quickly become apparent, and our hearts go out to all those affected.”

Minister Boyd echoed these sentiments, noting, “The lives of impacted Queenslanders were turned upside down in an instant, but we’re here for them now and for the long haul.” Indeed, the Queensland Community Recovery Hotline remains available around the clock to assist residents with their claims and connect them to the resources they need.

A Community United in Resilience

As the Gold Coast community grapples with the aftermath of these devastating storms, the outpouring of support and resilience has been truly inspiring. Neighbors are coming together to lend a hand, clearing debris and checking on one another. Local businesses are rallying to support their community, offering discounted supplies and services to those in need.

At Café Mila, we’ve been humbled to witness the strength and determination of our patrons as they navigate this challenging time. Many have shared stories of lost belongings, damaged homes, and disrupted livelihoods. Yet, in the face of adversity, we’ve seen a remarkable spirit of compassion and a deep-rooted commitment to rebuilding and moving forward.

At the heart of Café Mila’s mission is a deep commitment to fostering meaningful connections within our community. As our neighbors work to rebuild their lives, we believe it’s crucial to provide a space for shared experiences, mutual support, and collective healing.

To this end, we’ve been hosting a variety of community engagement events, from neighborhood clean-up initiatives to educational cooking classes. These gatherings not only bring people together but also empower them with practical skills and knowledge to support their recovery efforts.

Our latest initiative, the “Mila Makers Market,” has been particularly well-received. This monthly event showcases the work of local artisans, musicians, and small-business owners, providing them with a platform to share their talents and connect with the community. It’s been inspiring to witness the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that has emerged in the wake of the storms, as people find innovative ways to rebuild and reinvent.

Our coffee and tea offerings, for instance, are carefully curated to highlight the unique flavors and provenance of sustainable producers from around the world.

By embracing a holistic, sustainability-focused approach, we aim to not only nourish our community but also cultivate a future that is more resilient, equitable, and in harmony with the natural world.

Celebrating Cultural Diversity and Artistic Expression

As the Gold Coast community comes together to rebuild, we recognize the importance of celebrating the rich cultural diversity that makes our region so vibrant and unique. At Café Mila, we’ve been honored to host a variety of events that showcase the artistic and culinary traditions of our neighbors.

From live music and poetry performances to collaborative maker spaces and family-friendly cultural celebrations, our café has become a hub for artistic expression and cross-cultural exchange. These gatherings not only provide a sense of joy and creative fulfillment but also foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the diverse tapestry that makes up our community.
